Chapter 51 Architecture of the IBM System / 370 i

چکیده
The years since the introduction of System/360 in 1964 have produced very substantial changes in most aspects of the design, manufacture, and use of information-processing systems. The hardware technology for realizing logic fiinctions has evolved from semi-integrated circuit modules with single devices per chip to hundreds or thousands of circuits on a single silicon chip. The technology for high-speed storage has changed from magnetic cores to dense arrays of transistors on silicon chips. The growth in size and function of systems software has surprised even the practitioners. It is not surprising, therefore, to discover that extensions and refinements to the architecture^ of System/360 were found to be necessary. This paper reviews the motivation for extending the System/360 architecture and describes the design considerations associated with the extensions adopted for System/370.^ It comments on some experiences with the original objectives and concepts of System/360. Finally, it summarizes the characteristics of IBM machines implementing the System/360 and the System/370 architectures [Amdahl, Blaauw, and Brooks, 1964; Amdahl, 1964;

System/370 Extended Architecture: Facilities for Virtual Machines
This paper describes the evolution of facilities for virtual machines on IBM System/370 computers, and presents the elements of a new architectural facility designed for the virtual-machine environment. Assists that have been added to various Systern/370 models to support the use of virtual machines are summarized, and a general facility for this purpose which was introduced with the System/370...
متن کاملThe Origin of the VM/370 Time-Sharing System
VM/370 is an operating system which provides its multiple users with seemingly separate and independent IBM System/ 370 computing systems. These virtual machines are simulated using IBM Systeml370 hardware and have its same architecture. In addition, VM/370 provides a single-user interactive system for personal computing and a computer network system for information interchange among interconne...
متن کاملEnterprise Systems Architecture/370: An Architecture for Multiple Virtual Space Access and Authorization
The Enterprise Systems Architecturel370" provides a significant step in the IBM System/370 evolution by providing new capabilities for virtual addressing and program linkage across multiple address spaces. This paper reviews the evolution that led to this advance and illuminates the goals, such as eliminating growth constraints and improving security, integrity, reliability, and performance, th...
متن کاملArchitecture and software support in IBM S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers for IEEE Floating-Point arithmetic
IEEE Binary Floating-Point is an industrystandard architecture. The IBM System/360 hexadecimal floating-point architecture predates the IEEE standard and has been carried forward through the System/370 to current System/390 processors. The growing importance of industry standards and floatingpoint combined to produce a need for IEEE Floating-Point on System/390. At the same time, customer inves...
متن کاملESA/390 Interpretive-Execution Architecture, Foundation for VM/ESA
The interpretive-execution facility of Enterprise Systems Architecture/390TM (ESA/390TM) provides an instruction for the execution of virtual machines. This instruction, called START INTERPRETIVE EXECUTION (SIE), was initially created for virtualizing either System/370m or 370-XA architectures and was used later for virtualizing ESA/370' and ESA/390 architectures. SIE has evolved to provide cap...
